Working vs. Embodying

I'm often told that I work a lot, and sometimes I feel that way too. I left my corporate job about two years ago, and even though I take great pride in my identity as "the unemployed friend," I probably work more now than ever.

Building a business or vision takes a lot of work, but the work looks different than you'd imagine. I don't work 8 hours everyday, and I don't necessarily have a higher up that I report to. I get to set my own schedule, and sometimes that means I'm sitting in the park thinking for three hours before opening my laptop.

Do I have the best work/life balance? Certainly not.

Admitting that brought me a lot of shame in the past. But then I realized that my job as an artist is embodied. Rather than going to work every morning, I now see my job as being an imperfect creative. Creativity and imperfection are not tasks I clock in and out of; they are part of my daily life.

What's that thing they say? "If you're passionate about your job, you won't work a day in your life."

When you're building something meaningful, it’s important to remember that the line between work and life will probably blur. Instead of feeling ashamed that you can't "clock out" of your calling, make the conscious decision to live it fully, every day, in everything you do.

(& don't forget to rest!)
