Maybe that's just how you work...

—My therapist, after I explained how much my energy fluctuates since starting this business

I always take a looooooong break in the middle of creating a new piece.

It typically goes like this: I start energized, quickly transfer my sketch to canvas, and finish 70% of the piece within the first two weeks. Then, I hit a wall. Unsure of how to move forward, I stop painting for months.

In the past, this part of my process would fill me with stress. I'd feel like an impostor, and I'd obsessively sketch and sketch and sketch in a futile attempt at unblocking myself. But this time was different.

When I hit that wall, I didn’t panic. I gave myself permission to sit with it. For three months, I observed the piece, talked it over with friends, and leaned into my curiosity. Then, as if on cue, inspiration struck. I could see the final 30% clearly and finished the piece within a week.

This story is a perfect example of why creativity is such an important tool in resisting perfectionism. Our journeys are rarely a straight path—they are winding roads with pauses, detours, and sometimes, complete standstills. Each part is essential to the process and should be embraced as such.

It's incredibly difficult to allow ourselves the space to breathe, to step back, and to simply be with our work without forcing it forward. In these moments, trust that the spark will return when it’s ready, and when it does, it will be brighter than ever.
