Let's Talk about Sovereignty

"From the beginning, I was looking for a sovereignty--an authority--that I believed was available to me only in fiction writing. In that activity alone did I feel coherent, unfettered. There, in the process of writing, was the willed illusion, the control, the pleasure of nestling up ever closer to meaning. There alone the delight of redemption, the seduction of origination."

- Toni Morrison, The House that Race Built

I've been thinking a lot about the concept of Sovereignty, specifically, in the context of world-building and the freedom our imaginations grant us when we fully embrace it.

Art-making holds incredible power. It provides practitioners with a safety blanket and a sense of distance, allowing us to process emotions, uncover our blind spots, and bring hidden truths to light. What I haven't had language for, until now, is how creating art puts us in a position of power.

They say that the job of an artist is to imagine new worlds. As Toni Morrison so eloquently puts it, her writing left her "unfettered... nestling up ever closer to meaning." We have control over what we create, the meanings we assign, and the worlds we build. It's our responsibility to transform ideological concepts into reality.

Artists are tasked with the authority to create, and right now, the need for

creative sovereigns is greater than ever.

Are you ready to step into your sovereignty?
